The following product safety recall was conducted voluntarily by the firm in cooperation with the CPSC. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed. It is illegal to resell or attempt to resell a recalled consumer product.
Name of Product: Polaris Model Year 2004.5 Sportsman 500, Model Year 2005 Sportsman 400, Sportsman 500, Sportsman 600, Sportsman 700, Sportsman 6x6, Scrambler 500, Trail Boss and Magnum 330 ATVs.
Units: About 61,020 (This recall was first announced in May 2005)
Manufacturer/Importer: Polaris Industries Inc., of Medina , Minn.
Hazard: Some 2004.5 and 2005 Model Year Sportsman, Scrambler 500 ATVs, Trail Boss and Magnum 330 ATVs were assembled with possibly defective Electronic Control Modules (ECM) which may fail and overheat. If this were to occur, excessive heat could cause a fire, possibly resulting in serious injury or death.
Incidents/Injuries: Polaris has received 68 reports of the ECM overheating. No injuries have been reported.
Description: Only select model year Polaris ATVs are part of this recall. The Sportsman ATV model and serial number identification decal is located on the front side of the front radiator covering. The Scrambler 500 ATV model and serial number identification decal is located on top of the front cab cover. The Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), or serial number is also permanently stamped into the left frame rail behind the left front wheel of all Polaris ATVs. Affected units can be verified by comparing the last six digits of the VIN to the serial number range in bold typed below. NOTE: Not all 2004.5 and 2005 model year vehicles are affected. Sold at: Polaris dealers sold these ATVs nationwide from August 2004 through February 2005 for between $3,799 and $7,699.

Remedy: Free repair. Contact your Polaris ATV dealer to schedule an appointment for ECM replacement. Polaris has notified registered affected consumers directly about this recall.

Related Recalls
When the recalled carrier bearings are installed in a Polaris RZR XP Turbo or Turbo S vehicle and the fuel tank expands, the drive shaft can come in contact with the fuel tank, causing the tank to develop a hole or crack. This can cause the fuel tank to leak gasoline, posing fire and burn hazards.
The high voltage cables on the motor controller unit can be loose, causing the cable to arc or overheat while in use, posing fire and crash hazards and risk of serious injury.
The recalled ATVs fail to comply with the requirements of the federal mandatory ATV safety regulations. The youth ATVs’ mechanical suspension fails to comply with safety requirements, posing a crash hazard. The adult ATVs’ service brakes fail to sufficiently stop the vehicle, posing a crash hazard, and the handlebars pose a laceration hazard if the adult rider’s body or head impacts the handlebars. ATVs that fail to meet the mandatory safety regulations pose a risk of serious injury or death.
The throttle lever on the recalled ATVs can fail to return to the idle position when a driver releases it, and the vehicle could then unexpectedly continue to accelerate, posing a crash hazard.
The recalled youth ATVs fail to comply with the requirements of the federal mandatory ATV regulations. The handlebars pose a laceration hazard if the child rider’s body or head impacts the handlebars at a high rate of speed. ATVs that fail to meet the mandatory safety requirements pose a risk of serious injury or death.
The ATV can leak fuel at the fuel pump flange outlet, posing a fire hazard and risk of serious injury to the rider or passenger.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is charged with protecting the public from unreasonable risk of injury associated with the use of thousands of types of consumer products. Deaths, injuries, and property damage from consumer product-related incidents cost the nation more than $1 trillion annually. Since the CPSC was established more than 50 years ago, it has worked to ensure the safety of consumer products, which has contributed to a decline in injuries associated with these products.
Federal law prohibits any person from selling products subject to a Commission ordered recall or a voluntary recall undertaken in consultation with the CPSC.
