NEISS

What is NEISS and why is it important?

CPSC's National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS) is a national probability sample of hospitals with 24 hour Emergency Rooms containing at least six beds in the U.S. and its territories. It is a statistically valid surveillance system with the primary purpose of providing timely data on consumer product-related injuries. Patient information is collected from each NEISS hospital for every emergency visit involving an injury associated with consumer products. From this sample, the total number of product-related injuries treated in hospital emergency rooms nationwide can be estimated.
While that is still NEISS's primary purpose, in the year 2000 CPSC initiated an expansion of the system to collect data on all injuries. Sixty-four of the 98 hospitals on the system collect this expanded data. With the expansion, NEISS becomes an important public health research tool, not just for CPSC, but also for other groups throughout the U.S. and around the world.
