WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Peloton Interactive Inc., of New York, are jointly announcing the approval of a rear guard repair for the recalled Tread+ treadmill. The approved rear guard repair eliminates the potential for entrapment near the rear roller of the treadmill. The rear guard repair features a breakaway design that pivots away from the treadmill when it comes into contact with a person or object, shutting off power to the unit and decelerating the belt.
While the guard is being manufactured, consumers may register in advance for a Fall 2023 delivery. The rear guard and installation will be free to consumers. Consumers should register for the free repair online at www.onepeloton.com and click on Product Recalls at the bottom of the page or at https://support.onepeloton.com/hc/en-us/articles/360060722012. For questions concerning the recall contact Peloton toll-free at 866-679-9129 from 6 a.m. to 12 a.m. ET, 7 days a week. Consumers also have the option of requesting a full refund until November 6, 2023, or a prorated refund thereafter.
On May 5, 2021, CPSC and Peloton announced the recall of 125,000 Tread+ treadmills following the death of a child and dozens of incidents. Adult users, children, pets, and objects can be pulled underneath the rear roller, posing a risk of injury or death. Since the May 2021 recall, there have been 279 additional reported incidents and 61 additional reports of injuries. To date, in addition to the reported death, Peloton has received a total of 351 incident reports of pull-unders, including 90 reports of injuries to consumers.
