Statement of Acting Chairman Ann Marie Buerkle on the Passing of Former CPSC Chairman, S. John Byington

September 28, 2017

The second Chairman of CPSC, S. John Byington, died on September 15, 2017. John was nominated to the Commission by President Ford and then designated Chairman. He served from June 2, 1976 through June 30, 1978. With degrees in both pharmacy and the law, John was in a unique position to address the emerging issue of chronic hazards posed by chemical products such as TRIS. He is perhaps most remembered for his projects on risk-based decision making, cost–benefit analysis and program management.

Our deepest sympathies to John’s family and our gratitude for his service to this agency.
