National Institute of Standards and Technology Report, “Technical Note 1791: Evaluation of Firepots and Gel Fuels”

The report titled, “Technical Note 1791: Evaluation of Firepots and Gel Fuels,” presents the findings of research conducted by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) under an interagency agreement with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).  NIST performed this research to characterize the firepot and gel fuel products in the marketplace, define safety issues related to firepots and gel fuels, and identify ways to address the hazards associated with the use of firepots and gel fuels.  This research was completed in support ofCPSC’s advance notice of proposed rulemaking (ANPR) on these products.  CPSC staff will use this information to develop a staff recommendation to the Commission as part of the process initiated with the ANPR mentioned above.

This report will be posted on CPSC’s website to solicit comments from the public and to keep stakeholders informed of the progress of technical research related to the agency’s regulatory activities.  Written comments were due by July 1, 2013.
