Retrieval
NEISS data is of interest to a variety of groups outside of CPSC
from researchers to the media. The websites below are accessible to
the public and allow interested parties to retrieve this data.
CPSC's NEISS
CPSC's national injury estimates are now available via NEISS on line
at www.cpsc.gov/library/neiss.html.
This site provides data on injuries associated with specific consumer
products and activities - such as bicycles, doors and baseball. It
will generate estimates for the number of patients treated in U.S.
hospital emergency departments within a broad set of categories including:
- Treatment date (one year maximum range; e.g., how many injuries
were treated in 1996)
- Product (e.g., how many bicycle injuries occurred)
- Sex (e.g., how many injuries occurred to women)
- Age (e.g., how many injuries occurred to people aged 35-55)
- Diagnosis (e.g., how many lacerations occurred)
- Disposition (e.g., how many people were admitted to the hospital)
- Locale (e.g., how many injuries occurred at a school)
- Body part (e.g., how many injuries involved the knee)
For example, the following query could be made: number of males between
the ages of 50 and 70 treated in hospital emergency rooms between
February 1999 and October 1999 for injuries associated with use of
a ladder at home. The response would include the actual number of
cases/injuries in the NEISS sample, and an estimate for the entire
nation.
WISQARSTM
The
Web-based Injury Statistics Query and Reporting System (WISQARSTM),
is an interactive database system that provides customized reports
of injury-related data. This site provides access to the all-injuries
estimates from NEISS. National estimates of injury are provided by
intent (unintentional, assault, suicide attempt, legal intervention)
and mechanism (falls, poisoning, cut/pierce) of injury from the 65
NEISS All Injury Program hospitals.
WISQARSTM reports data in fatal and nonfatal categories.
The fatal data or mortality data is presented in three different reports
- Fatal Injury Reports, Leading Causes of Death Reports, and Years
of Potential Life Lost. Most of the data is represented through the
use of tables and/or charts.
The nonfatal data is only broken down into two types of reports
- Nonfatal Injury Reports and Leading Causes of Nonfatal Injury Reports.
These reports are also represented through the use of tables and/or
charts.
WISQARSTM can be accessed by clicking the following link

The National Center for Injury Prevention and Control, Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention, has also published a number of reports
on NEISS All Injury Program data. Click the reports icon to view a

Work-RISQS
The Work-related Injury Statistic Query System (Work-RISQ) database
provides a web-based public access query system for obtaining national
estimates (number of cases) and rates (number of cases per hours worked)
for nonfatal occupational injuries and illnesses treated in U.S. hospital
emergency departments. Users may interactively query based on demographic
characteristics, nature of injury/illness, and incident circumstances
for the years 1998 and 1999. Additional data-years will be added in
future updates.
Work-RISQS
is limited to work-related injuries and illnesses treated in emergency
departments. It does not include cases that were treated in other
medical venues. It provides an important view of the occupational
injury burden in America and complements other national data systems.
Work-RISQS can be accessed by clicking on the following link - (http://www2a.cdc.gov/risqs).
