Web Conferences Regarding the Publicly Available Consumer Product Safety Information Database

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is implementing a new Publicly Available Consumer Product Safety Information Database (Database) pursuant to section 6A of the Consumer Product Safety Act (CPSA), as amended by the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008 (CPSIA). The Database will allow consumers and other specified users to submit to the CPSC information about a harm or risk of harm relating to the use of a consumer product, or other product or substance regulated by the CPSC, called reports of harm. Qualifying reports of harm will also be publicly available for search and review by other users. Consumer product manufacturers (including importers) and private labelers will have an opportunity to post comments about the publicly available reports of harm relating to their products. The CPSC published a final rule on the Database in the Federal Register on December 9, 2010 (75 FR 76832), which will be codified in the Code of Federal Regulations at 16 CFR 1102. Information on a “soft launch” of the Database is forthcoming in January, 2011. Official launch of the Database is anticipated for March, 2011.

To assist stakeholders in preparing for launch of the Database, CPSC staff held two Web conferences in January, 2011, to demonstrate to interested stakeholders the incident reporting form, industry registration and comment features, and the search function of the Database.
